Bear Creek Church

(1876-?)

From the Minutes of the District Meeting of the Southern District of Illinois.

Held by the Brethren in the Mill Creek Church, Adams, County, Illinois, Oct. 11 and 12, 1875:  "A request from members in Hancock County to be organized into a church.  Answer: Left to David Wolf and Arthur G. Black, to attend to it."

The Bear Creek Church of Ill., have identified themselves with the congregational Brethren with the view of practicing the word of the Lord more perfectly. We were under the impression that the Brethren give full scope to practice the word of thr [sic] Lord. If not, we are sure we should and thus retain those who wish to do better (?) Brethren, what lack we yet?

From the Bear Creek Church, Illinois.

MORRISONVILLE, ILL., In No. 45 of present volume, page 712, you say you are informed that the Bear Creek Church of Illinois has identified itself with the Congregational Brethren, with the view of practicing the word of the Lord more closely. And as I have been written to in regard to it, by brethren wanting to know whether it is correct, I make this explanation:  Bear Creek Church, of Christian county, Illinois, stands identified with the Church of the Brethren as it always did. There was at one time a Church in Hancock Co., Illinois, known in the Southern district of Illinois, as the Bear Creek Church, but became disorganized on account of their ministers moving away, (also private members) until there were only about eight or ten members left, and they, with the one exception, identified themselves with the Congregational Brethren. The Church in Christian Co., Illinois is in a prosperous condition. No jars, but everything moving along quietly and smoothly, and occasionally an addition by baptism. Only two, since its organization, over eight years ago, have gone back. Hope this will be sufficient to satisfy all inquiring minds, as to the standing of the Bear Creek Church.                                      A. S. LEER.
