“But Mary treasured all these
words and pondered them in her heart.”

 Luke 2:19

We’ve heard many words in church these weeks of Advent and Christmas. Stirring words.
Hopeful words. Words of prophets and poets, angels and faithful children of God.

We’ve heard many words.

We have also sung words, read words, and spoken words.
In addition to words, we have seen images of hope, peace, joy, and love.
We’ve shared gestures, engaged signs, and sensed wonder.
It has been a full season of preparation and celebration!

Now it is time to pause and ponder.

With the church year started and the calendar year ready to dawn, we ask,
what words, what experiences, what lessons of Christmas will remain with us?
Has this annual journey to Bethlehem offered some lasting insight?
Is there something of this Jesus that is born is us today?
Has our faith been burnished by hope?
Has our vision been sharpened by peace? Are our days brightened by joy?
Are our hearts softened and inspired or in other ways touched by the spirit of love?

Typically, the weeks preceding Christmas bring a letter or two to the local newspaper  lamenting
the loss of focus in Christmas celebrations. “Keep Christ in Christmas,” they proclaim.

The thought for me today is keeping Christmas in our living after the angel songs quiet and candle light fades.
Will we carry the evocative, mysterious peace of Silent Night into the streets of our neighborhoods,
the rooms of our homes, and the byways of our nation and world? Will we let the warm glow of
candle-light affect the way we see other people, especially those who appear to be so different from us?
Will we welcome the birth of new life or cling stubbornly to the old?
We’ve heard many words these weeks of Advent and Christmas;
now is the time to ponder that which is planted and wanting to blossom.

 Peace, Howard
